Why We Need to Challenge Ourselves — And How It’s About So Much More Than Fitness Goals

We live in a world of convenience. Air conditioning, food delivery apps, instant entertainment — everything is designed to keep us comfortable.

And sure, comfort has its place. But too much of it? That can quietly wear away at our physical health, our mental resilience, and even our sense of purpose.

I recently read a book called The Comfort Crisis, and it really struck a chord. The author explores how stepping outside of our comfort zones — physically, mentally, and even spiritually — is essential for growth. One of the concepts that stuck with me is the Japanese idea of Misogi.

What’s Misogi?

Misogi is the idea that, once a year, you should do something so physically and mentally demanding that there’s a real chance you might fail.

It’s not about competition or comparison — it’s about discovering what you’re truly capable of. It’s about stripping away the distractions of everyday life and finding clarity, grit, and purpose.

Now, that might sound intense. But the beauty of Misogi is that it’s personal. For one person, it might mean summiting a mountain. For another, it might mean running their first 5K, or walking a trail they’ve always been intimidated by.

The point isn’t what the challenge looks like — it’s what it means to you.

The "Why Behind the Why"

We talk a lot about goals in the physical therapy and health world. “I want to lose 20 pounds.” “I want to run a half marathon.” “I want to finally get out of pain.”

These are great — but here’s the truth: surface-level goals often fizzle out. What keeps people motivated through the hard days, the setbacks and the doubts is getting real about why they want to achieve those goals.

Do you want to lose 20 pounds? Why? Maybe it’s to have more energy for your kids. Maybe it’s because you want to feel proud when you look in the mirror. Or maybe it’s because a health scare woke you up.

Do you want to run that 5K? Why? Maybe it’s not about the race at all — maybe it’s about proving to yourself that you’re not stuck, that your body can be strong again after injury or illness.

When we uncover the “why behind the why,” the challenge stops being just physical — it becomes personal, even spiritual. And that’s where real, lasting change happens.

We All Need Guidance Sometimes

The truth is, these kinds of challenges — whether it’s your first time back in the gym, tackling chronic pain, or signing up for your own version of a Misogi — they can be daunting. And that’s okay.

We all need guidance. Sometimes it’s from our friends or family. Sometimes it’s from a coach, a physical therapist, or a healthcare provider. Sometimes it’s from a mentor or even a spiritual leader.

At Hubert Physical Therapy, we believe that health isn’t just about fixing injuries — it’s about building the strength, resilience, and confidence to take on the challenges that life throws your way. We love helping people not just recover but rediscover what they’re capable of — physically and mentally.

So, What’s Your Challenge?

Maybe this is your year to finally take that hike you’ve been putting off. Maybe it’s signing up for a race, tackling that nagging injury, or simply showing up for yourself in a new way.

Whatever it is — make it meaningful. Dig deep. Find the “why behind the why.”

Because growth never happens in comfort zones — it happens out there, where things get a little hard, a little messy, and a whole lot more rewarding.

If you're ready to take on your next challenge — and want the right guidance along the way — we’re here for you.

Let’s get uncomfortable — together.
